Verified Eco: how we choose what goes on this site

Most "eco-friendly" product lists are just a green colour palette and a vibe. We don't do that. Every product on this site is checked against the criteria below before it gets a listing — and we tell you exactly where it stands, including the parts that aren't perfect.

Why this page exists

“Sustainable," "eco-friendly," and "green" have no legal definition. Anyone can print them on a label. Our job is to do the work of checking behind the claim, so you don't have to — and to be honest when a product is a genuine improvement rather than a perfect solution, because very few products are perfect.

The five things we check:

1. Third-party certification

We prioritise products carrying certifications from bodies that actually audit, not just self-declare — for example, GOTS (organic textiles), FSC (responsible forestry), Fair Trade, USDA/EU Organic, Cradle to Cradle, EPA Safer Choice, Energy Star, and B Corp. A certification isn't mandatory for every listing, but a product with zero third-party backing needs to clear a higher bar on everything else below.

2. Materials and ingredients

What it's actually made of: recycled content percentage, biodegradability, avoidance of known problem materials (PVC, virgin single-use plastics, harmful dyes/finishes), and sourcing of raw materials (e.g. FSC-certified wood, organic cotton).

3. Packaging and shipping

Plastic-free or minimal packaging, recyclable/compostable materials, and where visible, whether the brand ships efficiently rather than burying a small item in oversized packaging.

4. Company transparency and practices

Does the brand publish a supply chain, sustainability report, or impact data — or just a mission statement? We weight real disclosure (even imperfect) above polished marketing copy with nothing behind it. Labour practices and manufacturing location matter here too.

5. Durability and end-of-life

Sustainability isn't just the making of a thing — it's whether you'll still be using it in five years, and what happens when you're done with it (repairable, recyclable, compostable, or genuinely built to last vs. designed to be replaced).

How we badge products

Rather than a pass/fail gate, we use three simple tiers so you can judge trade-offs yourself:

  • Verified — strong third-party certification plus clear performance on at least 3 of the 5 criteria above.

  • Better choice — a meaningfully lower-impact alternative to the mainstream option in its category, even without full certification. We explain specifically why.

  • Watch list — included for visibility/comparison, but with a flagged concern (e.g. good materials, poor transparency). We say exactly what the concern is.

What disqualifies a product outright

  • Marketing claims ("eco," "natural," "green") with no supporting evidence at all

  • Known greenwashing brands or products under active false-advertising investigation

  • Products where the sustainability claim applies to a trivial part of the item (e.g. "recycled" packaging around a virgin-plastic product)

Our commitment

  • We disclose our Amazon affiliate relationship clearly on every page

  • We do not accept payment from brands to be listed or ranked higher

  • If we get a certification or claim wrong, we correct it and note the correction

  • This page itself gets revisited and updated as certifications and standards evolve

A note on availability

Amazon stock changes constantly — a product that's available today may show as out of stock or discontinued tomorrow, and we can't guarantee a listed product will always be purchasable. If a link on this site is dead or a product's gone unavailable, please let us know so we can update it. We periodically re-check our recommendations, but stock changes faster than we can catch every time.

A note on our research — and yours

We put genuine time into checking certifications, materials, and company practices before anything appears on this site. But our research is not a substitute for your own judgement. Certifications can lapse, formulations can change between when we check and when you buy, and what works well for one household won't always suit another (allergies, specific care needs, local conditions, and personal preferences all vary).

Please do your own check before ordering — read the current listing, recent reviews, and any care or safety information, and make sure you're comfortable with the product yourself. We recommend products in good faith based on the research described above, but we can't guarantee outcomes for your specific situation, and we're not liable for purchasing decisions made based on our recommendations.
